Women's car insurance for neck injury cover
Fri, 23 Sep 2005

Women who drive minivans should consider taking out new policies that include cover for neck injuries, a new report suggests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study has found that many minivan models are fitted with poor quality headrests, which could lead to drivers getting whiplash in the case of an accident.

Women who drive minivans are particularly at risk, as minivan headrests are often designed with men in mind.

"It's disappointing that so many minivan seats are rated poor for rear impact protection," commented IIHS chief executive officer Adrian Lund.

"Drivers of minivans spend a lot of time on urban and suburban roads where rear-end collisions are common in stop-and-go traffic.

"Mums often are behind the wheel, and women are more vulnerable to whiplash injuries so they especially need good seats and head restraints."

Mr Lund also said that, for a headrest to be effective, it needs to move in complete synchrony with the seat when the minivan crashes, or the risk of neck injury is higher.

Only two of the minivan headrests assessed by the IIHS received a 'good' rating, while one received an 'acceptable' rating and another was rated as 'marginal'. The rest were all rated as 'poor'.
