Women's car insurance will identify potential whiplash sufferers
Thu, 28 Jul 2005

Insurers will now be able to identify if female claimants face the risk of long term health problems following a whiplash injury.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published research that shows that scientists at the University of Manchester have identified conditions during road traffic accidents that are more likely to cause chronic problems.

The researchers concluded that factors such as being in a car hit from behind or being stationary at time of collision increase the chances of people developing long-term neck pain.

It is hope that insurers will be able to use the data to assess the risk and ensure that claimants receive the appropriate treatment and care.

"Ensuring that injured people get the best possible care following any accident is a priority for the insurance industry," said Justin Jacobs, the ABI’s head of liability, motor and risk pricing.

"Now, quicker identification of those at higher risk will help ensure that claimants receive the right treatment, at the right time, to speed their recovery."

The ABI estimate that insurers deal with nearly 250,000 claims for whiplash related injuries each year.
