Uninsured drivers on the increase
Wed, 01 Oct 03

The number of British motorists driving without insurance is on the increase according to new research.

On average one in twenty drivers is uninsured and this number increases in certain 'hot spot' areas of cities such as Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham and parts of London.

For example, a recent survey carried out by the AA and the Greater Manchester Police found that in the Old Trafford area of the city, one in four drivers was uninsured.

The AA also revealed that in Finland uninsured drivers represent 1 in 200 and in Germany 1 in 500. Greece is the only European country with more uninsured drivers than the UK.

The cost to insurers of crashes involving such drivers is estimated to be around £700 million a year and this is paid for by other drivers in the form of increased premiums.
