Uninsured drivers spurred by impunity
Most uninsured drivers don't bother with insurance because they believe they have a good chance of getting away with it, according to AA Insurance.
The number of uninsured drivers on Britain's roads is currently estimated to be one in 20 with culprits emanating from problems with both men's and women's car insurance.
Among the five main road traffic enforcement agencies - camera partnerships, local authority parking enforcement, congestion charging, the DVLA and the Police - only the latter routinely checks if cars are taxed or insured.
Drivers of vehicles caught by speed enforcement cameras do not have their tax or insurance records checked, for instance.
"If uninsured drivers do get caught, the penalties are usually much lower than the cost of insurance," said Neale Phillips, director of AA Insurance, the UK's biggest home and motor insurance broker.
