Tough measures deter car insurance cheats
Wed, 11 Aug 04
Tough new measures will help to discourage car insurance cheats according to a leading insurer.
The government is planning to give the police new powers to confiscate and even destroy the cars of people who fail to get themselves insured.
Ministers have taken a tough stance after figures showed that up to one in 20 drivers do not have insurance cover.
"We believe that the recommendations of the Greenaway review will make people think twice before using a car without insurance, the key now is to implement these proposals as soon as possible," a spokesman for CIS Insurance said.
"Everyone is well aware of the consequences arising from the actions of uninsured motorists and the impact it has on innocent motorists and their families. If those who consider committing such offences were to take a more responsible approach to driving, not only would our roads be a much safer place to be but the costs borne by the innocent motorist would be reduced too."
