Tories pledge to halt car insurance scams
June 15 04
The Conservatives have unveiled a 6-point plan of tough measures to deal with the problem of uninsured motor vehicles.
Among the provisions outlined by the party of opposition for the tackling of car insurance crime is the confiscation of a vehicle, although it is likely that it would remain a punishment reserved for repeat offenders.
Other measures advocated include a link between the motor insurance database and the vehicle licensing database, to facilitate instant identification of offenders, and the inclusion of lessons on insurance in the driving test.
The proposals also support an increase in the minimum fines for those find guilty of driving uninsured for the first time, as well as the establishment of lower premiums for drivers who undergo extra training.
Tory transport spokesman Damian Green said: "Conservatives want to make Britain's roads safer and that means getting tough with those who pose a serious risk to other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
