Saying sorry won't affect women's car insurance premiums
Mon, 03 Oct 2005

Saying sorry doesn't mean that women's car insurance premium costs will automatically rise, according to a new industry survey.

A new poll conducted by Norwich Union concludes that saying sorry could actually help reduce claim levels. Even though 88 per cent of UK motorists want to apologise following a collision, around 38 per cent don't because they feel it would prevent them filing a claim or stop their insurance company paying out.

However, 31 per cent of drivers said they were more likely to exaggerate injuries and car damage in a claim if the other party involved was angry following the accident, while 40 per cent admitted they would be less likely to exaggerate their claim if the other party showed some form of sympathy or said sorry.

"Not saying sorry has two effects, it encourages some people to exaggerate minor damages or injuries and prevents others from correctly identifying the extent of their injuries," said Dominic Clayden, Norwich Union director of technical claims.

"Both have an escalatory affect on the cost of claims that are passed on to motorists in the form of increased premiums and excesses."

He added that Norwich Union is to launch a new campaign aimed at encouraging motorists to say sorry as an expression of regret rather than an admission of wrong-doing.
