Pay as you drive could offer benefits on women's car insurance
Tue, 11 Oct 2005

Norwich Union believes that pay as you drive insurance could help reduce costs for female motorists.

The insurance company has purchased a new system from Trafficmaster, that uses a high-tech Global Positioning Satellite device to log drivers' trips, meaning that motorists pay insurance based on their actual distance travelled.

Therefore, people who drive only short distances such as the daily school run could find their insurance costs reduced.

The technology has already undergone extensive US trials by Progressive Insurance and has helped to reduce premiums for many low-mileage car users, although it does tend to mean expensive cover for long distance drivers.

It is expected that journeys conducted between 6am and 11pm would cost around 6 pence a mile, whilst after 11pm this charge could increase to £1 per mile.

Young drivers, aged between 18 and 21, could also benefit from the scheme as they often have relatively high premiums but tend to drive short, low risk journeys.
