Multiple cameras could improve women's car insurance premiums
Mon, 14 Nov 2005
The introduction of multiple cameras on to UK roads could help reduce women's car insurance premiums. The recently appointed head of traffic police Meredydd Hughes has announced that he supports the use of CCTV cameras every 400 yards on British roads, reports the Times. The technology would use Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to identify and ticket motorists automatically as well as enabling faster reporting of traffic accidents or congestion. The cameras could also allow for better tracking of those motorists who drive without valid insurance cover. The CCTV cameras may be placed in major shopping centres as well as in car parks to deter thieves and criminals. In 2004, a pilot testing of the ANPR system enabled police officers to issue a total of 51,000 tickets for various motoring offences including driving whilst using a mobile phone, driving without a seatbelt as well as caching unlicensed and untaxed motorists. It is hoped that 24-7 CCTV coverage would eventually reduce the number of motoring offences committed and make the roads safer therefore reducing women's car insurance costs.
