Motoring costs remain stable study shows
Mon Aug 9 04

The cost of motoring, including car insurance, repairs and fuel costs, have remained largely static over the last 20 year according to new research.

RAC spokeswoman Rebecca Bell claims that prices have stabilised in the last two decades, despite a large fall in the cost of new cars bought in Britain in the last five years.

Despite the reduction in buying cars, research suggests that since 1999, petrol is up 15 per cent, servicing up by 30 per cent and insurance up by 50 per cent.

Speaking on Sky News this morning, Ms Bell said: "The cost of actually buying a car has been falling in recent years and that is due in part to the Competition Commission which was looking at the price of cars in this country compared to cars in Europe.

"That has really triggered a reduction in the price of buying a car. Whilst that is good news for motorists, at the same time they have seen an increase in the cost of insuring their car as well as an increase in the cost of petrol."

Environment groups have argued that the cost of motoring has actually gone down and have called upon the Government to go through with its proposed fuel duty increase due in September, although that is reportedly now unlikely given the record price of oil at the moment
