Jamieson: Uninsured drivers are a "menace"
Tue Aug 10 04
Road safety minister, David Jamieson, has described uninsured drivers as "a menace", claiming that motorists would welcome new proposals to tackle the problem.
His comments come as the Government has unveiled measures to improve detection and to increase penalties, following a report from Professor David Greenaway.
There are plans to integrate vehicle registration and insurance industry databases in order to allow easier roadside detection of uninsured drivers. And there will also be new penalties for the one in 20 Britons who are estimated to drive without insurance, including car confiscation and disposal.
Mr. Jamieson told ITV's 'Lunchtime News': "The ordinary drivers, the sensible people who are the vast majority of people in this country who do insure and pay their tax, they're fed up with people who don't and these people are a menace."
Accidents involving uninsured drivers are estimated to cost £200 million a year, and are thought to add £30 to the premiums of other motorists.
