Insurers welcome "sensible" government measures
Wed, 11 Aug 04
The insurance industry has welcomed new government measures designed to clamp down on the number of uninsured drivers.
Government figures show that such drivers are ten times more likely to have been convicted of drink driving and six times more likely to have been convicted of driving an unsafe vehicle.
One of the more radical measures that is due to be announced today is the plan to allow the police to confiscate and even destroy cars of persistent offenders.
"I think the government's proposals are sensible, well thought through and echo a lot of what we have been saying - they really do provide the perfect platform to tackle the problem," Malcolm Tarling of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) told Sky News.
Uninsured drivers represent a major threat to other motorists and are also responsible for forcing up premiums.
