Insurer to pay out for speeding
A Liechtenstein-based insurer yesterday offered to refund German motorists for any fines incurred if caught speeding by radar traps on the autobahn.
Supergau confirmed it would pay a maximum of _1,000 per year for the fines, and it is believed that some 2,000 drivers have been attracted to the company as a consequence.
German police were highly critical of the scheme, despite Supergau giving assurances that the policy does not cover car crashes and speeding that exceeds the limit by more than 25 mph.
"Speed limits serve a clear purpose, to protect the public. We already have some 7 million people registered for traffic offences and we certainly do not want these figures to rise," a Berlin police spokesman said.
The firm is expected to target men with its scheme but said it would also be providing women's car insurance.
