Insurance claims set for big increase
April 8 04
Insurers are gearing up for a huge number of road accident claims today, according to research from Norwich Union's Crash Index.
An insurer receives 20 per cent more claims on Maundy Thursday than on any other day of the year, according to the study.
And tomorrow may provide little respite. The Index suggests that one's chances of having an accident are greatest on Friday, and not Monday as commonly assumed.
All these findings suggest that car insurance premiums are set to be forced even higher by the prevalence of bad driving on Britain's roads.
The study also revealed that some three-quarters of drivers who describe themselves as "confident" behind the wheel have actually been involved in an accident, while 60 per cent of those surveyed believed they would fail their driving test were they to take it now.
The most recent evidence suggests that one in eight motorists will eventually have an accident, the highest recorded collision level since records began.
Julian Lowe, actuarial director at Norwich Union, who has compiled the Crash Index, said: "No one likes to admit they are a bad driver, but we've been startled by motorists' misplaced confidence on the roads.
"Cocky drivers are a real menace as they often regard good driving as the ability to master the controls of the car at higher speeds. Our claims data reveals just how common car collisions really are and how we quickly forget the skills and safety guidelines needed to obtain a driving licence," said Mr Lowe.
