Good driving should be reflects in women's car insurance premiums
Thu, 10 Nov 2005

Female hormones could mean that women's car insurance premiums should be more competitive than male policies.

Research at Bradford University shows that the female hormone oestrogen could mean that women are better drivers than men, reports BBC News.

The hormone is thought to increase the attention span and ability to learn rules and therefore mean women are less likely to be involved in a car accident.

The study involved 43 men and women completing a number of neuropsychological tests that were designed to assess various awareness skills, with the women clearly showing their ability to multi-task.

Speaking at the Society for Endocrinology meeting, the Bradford-based researchers said:
"This study demonstrates that tasks requiring mental flexibility favour women over men, an area previously not considered to elicit strong sex differences.

"Driving could be an example of how this is applied to everyday life.

"Our study suggests that oestrogens may positively influence neuronal activity in the frontal lobes, the area of the brain stimulated by tasks of attention and rule learning, which could explain the female advantage when performing these tasks."

Female motorists will be hoping that the research will eventually lead to reduced women's car insurance cover.
