Trading points to protect female car insurance premiums
Mon, 16 May 2005
Some female drivers being caught speeding are trading points with their partners in order to reduce premiums.
Research, commissioned by Churchill Car Insurance, concludes that nearly ten million motorists would be willing to swap points with their other half.
A total of 12 points on a licence leads to an automatic ban but as speed cameras only capture a vehicle's registration number, it is possible for some drivers to swap points to avoid adding to their points total.
Darren McCauley, head of car insurance at Churchill said: "People have become so dependent on their cars that they will go to great lengths to avoid a driving ban. Unless driving habits change, speeding will become a real threat to the modern motorist."
The study also found that 15 per cent of motorists said they would be willing to take the blame for their partner driving in a bus lane and 13 per cent would take responsibility for their partner going through a red traffic light.
