More female OAPs driving convertibles
Fri, 05 Aug 2005
The number of female OAPs driving convertibles has risen sharply, according to figures released by the AA. This summer has seen a 54 per cent rise in the number of women between 65-69 insuring open top cars compared to last year, while the number of women aged between 70-74 insuring convertibles this summer increased by 40 per cent. They also discovered a 16 per cent increase among 50-54 year old women. Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance, explained this rather surprising phenomenon. He said: "Recent fine weather combined with easy access to competitive insurance quotes means you're increasingly likely to get a slick silver surfer enjoying an open top convertible as you are a boy racer." Older males are to a lesser extent also following this trend, with a 18 per cent rise in the number of 60-64 year old men insuring convertibles. However, there is a reversal of this inclination among younger people, with a decrease by 24 per cent in the number of women aged 25-29 insuring open top cars particularly noteworthy.
