Female car insurance offers protection from the crusher

The cars of uninsured drivers are to be crushed under tough new government regulations.

Labour says that if they win the election they fully intend to tackle the problem of people who persistently drive on the roads without insurance.

It is estimated that uninsured motorists cause £200 million of damage every year as well as forcing insurance premiums of insured drivers up by £30 a year.

Labour would initiate the setting up of a new police database, which would link into number plate recognition cameras.

From these police would be able to trace and catch motorists breaking the law, by making it easier for patrols to instantly identify any uninsured motorists.

Studies have shown that uninsured motorists are ten times more likely to be convicted of drink-driving.

They are also six times more likely to be behind the wheel of an unroadworthy vehicle.

And on top of this uninsured drivers are three times more likely to be driving without due care and attention.

Labour says they would also like to link up a series of databases, thereby enabling police to cross-check whether a car is taxed, insured and has an MoT.
