Female car insurance may not cover 'frosting'
Mon, 25 Apr 2005
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has warned that drivers of vehicles stolen by opportunist thieves, who target cars with the ignition on, may not be able to claim.
'Frosting' occurs when a thief takes advantage of a driver who has started the ignition to defrost the car windows and returned indoors.
Technical services manager, Graeme Trudgill explained: "Waking up on a freezing cold morning, it can be tempting to save a few extra minutes by starting the engine and warming the vehicle up while you nip back inside to finish getting ready.
"But, from experience, we know that many motorists who do this may be at risk from 'frosting', which is when opportunist thieves steal the vehicle with the keys in the ignition, while the windscreen is being defrosted."
BIBA reports that most policies now have a specific "keys in car" or "vehicle left unattended" with which to exclude claims. Drivers may also be tripped up by the "reasonable care" clause the insurance company could invoke.
Mr Trudgill warned drivers that the best way to avoid this risk is to stay with the vehicle while it is defrosting.
