Car sales push growth in demand for female car insurance
Mon, 16 May 2005

Growing car sales are leading to a strong demand for female car insurance.

Figures by the RAC show that a total of 2,567,269 cars were purchased during 2004, with many new cars being bought by women drivers.

In 2003, women accounted for 43 per cent of driving licence holders compared with 31 per cent during 1975. Evidence also suggests that women are more concerned with road safety and less likely to break the law, with 20 per cent of male drivers in 2002 having points on their licences, compared to 12 per cent of female motorists.

"The idea of motoring as a male preserve is long gone, and car manufacturers now market cars directly to women drivers," said Alan Pulham, franchised dealer director for the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI

"Indeed, some of the most common cars on Britain's roads have become successful because of their popularity with women. These include everything from superminis to sports cars and 4x4s."
