European Parliament backs end to gender-based insurance rates
The European Parliament has backed plans to enforce gender equality in the provision of goods and services throughout Europe.
Meeting in Strasbourg, the EU assembly voted 313 to 141 to adopt the report on equal treatment in access to goods and services, including insurance and related financial services.
But the vote does not obligate national governments to enforce the outlined policies and the Liberal Democrats were the only mainstream UK political party to support the proposals.
Liberal Democrat spokesperson and Scottish MEP, Elspeth Attwooll, said: "We should insure people as individuals, not on the basis of gender stereotypes. It is no more acceptable to calculate risk from gender than it is from DNA, a factor that is already excluded."
However, the plans have led to criticism from some who claim they would lead to higher rates for both men's and women's car insurance.
The Association of British Insurers has warned that applying equal treatment without taking account of the fact that women statistically are safer drivers than men, could send women's motor insurance premiums spiralling.
The proposal is on the agenda for a June 1st and 2nd meeting of EU ministers.
