Concerns aired over black box plans
Mon Aug 9 04

A spokesman from the Association of British Drivers has expressed concern at the possible implications of a pay-as-you-go car insurance scheme currently being trialled.

The trials involve fitting a black box to a customer's car, which then sends detailed information to the insurer - Norwich Union - via mobile phone technology about where, when and how the motorist is driving.

The result would be that drivers pay insurance premiums that reflect their usage, which could change from month to month.

Speaking on Sky News this morning, Tony Vickers remarked: "I can see why it could have advantages, particularly for young drivers who have very, very high premiums at the present moment.

"But I am a little bit concerned that this may actually reward poor drivers who cover relatively low mileage whilst penalising quite skilled drivers who might drive 25,000 to 30,000 miles a year."

He went on to express concerns about the impact on the car insurance industry and the issue of personal privacy.
