Better driving should mean improved women's car insurance premiums
Tue, 17 May 2005

Better driving by female motorists should lead to lower premiums.

According to Diamond Insurance, statistics tend to show that women make better drivers than men. In 2000, around 20 per cent of male motorists had points on their licences compared to just 12 per cent of female drivers.

Claims data collected over the past three decades also shows that women are involved in fewer accidents and therefore should be entitled to lower annual premiums.

An insurance company often has to pay out more to fix a car when a man has had an accident as the car has to be extensively repaired, whereas women are more likely to have accidents at lower speeds, which causes far less damage to their car.

The total number of women on the road as also steadily increased. In 2003, women accounted for 43 per cent of driving licence holders compared with 31 per cent 30 years ago.
