ABI urges government to take action on uninsured drivers
The Government must introduce new measures to tackle uninsured drivers, according to a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers.
John Parker noted that the ABI would like to see tougher penalties for driving without insurance, including the confiscation of vehicles, as well as better methods of detection.
His comments follow research from the RAC's last week that suggested insured motorists were paying an extra £1bn in premiums to cover illegal drivers.
Mr. Parker told BBC Radio Five Live's 'Breakfast' that recent suggestions to link insurance in with tax discs to make the situation easier to monitor were already effectively in place.
He explained that when car owners went to renew their tax discs they had to provide proof of insurance. However, he pointed out that motorists could then cancel their insurance to save cash.
Mr. Parker went on to note that in Scandinavia levels of uninsured driving were far lower because of well integrated computer systems that allowed the police to identify offenders.
'There are much more rigorous systems to link databases of the cars that are on the road with the insurance database, and that's one of the things that we think is most important to help tackle this problem.'
'Certainly the insurance industry wants to do this, and we're suggesting that the Government needs to do this as well: join the databases up - they're big databases, so it's not a completely simple problem - but do that and then it will give the possibility of checking whether people are insured all the time.'
According to the Department for Transport there could be as many as one million uninsured drivers on the UK's roads, with gaps inn both men's and women's car insurance coverage.
