ABI defends insurance gender discrimination

Sex discrimination in car insurance is fully justified, according to the director general of the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Mary Francis has been responding to critics, who suggest that many among the third of male drivers who admit driving without adequate insurance would obtain proper cover if premiums were lower for young men.

Speaking to BBC One's Breakfast, Ms Francis said that women's car insurance policies are based on facts, "and the facts are that women tend to have fewer accidents and - perhaps it's because they drive slowly - they tend not to have such serious accidents."

She continued: "So we do feel it's fair that those who have most accidents and claim the most, pay the most."

The RAC Foundation has said that a tenth of accidents involve an uninsured driver, and these accidents together account for a £500 million bill to be footed by those who are insured.
