Frequently Asked Questions
How can I reduce my premium?
There are multiple ways to help to reduce your car insurance premiums, some examples of factors taken into account by insurers are as follows:
Engine Size of Car
Generally, the smaller the engine size, the better! Particularly in the first year a smaller engine size can help younger drivers to limit the cost of their car insurance. Even a 1.1 litre engine can make a difference over a 1.2. As a younger driver it is therefore important when looking for a car to keep the engine size smaller and to get a car insurance quote on every model you look at, so that you do not end up with a nasty surprise and a car you cannot afford to insure.
Group of Car
It is ideal to try and purchase a car with a lower insurance group to help keep insurance costs down. In the UK, Car Insurance premiums can be partly calculated using the Insurance Group that your car resides within.
The higher insurance premiums tend to come from higher category numbered vehicles. Factors that can be used to calculate group ratings will include the power of the car and also things such as potential repair/part costs. To help to keep your premiums at a minimum it is therefore sensible to own a car rated in one of the lower Car Insurance Groups.
Modifications to Car
Modifications made to cars tend to be done by younger drivers but this is highly likely to increase their Car Insurance premiums. If you consider modifying your vehicle then it may sway you if you speak to your Car Insurance company and find out, what the increase in insurance costs may be. Often they are prohibitive. The bigger the modifications the harder it will be to find reasonable cover. Changing your wheels to alloys with locking nuts may make no difference at all Upgrading the engine however will have serious insurance implications.
Value of Car
Insurers are generally willing to cover a vehicle on a third party basis up to a limit of around £2000 but a maximum of £5000. Beyond that Comprehensive cover will often be required. To this limit of £2000 there is not usually a great deal of difference in premiums to Third Party Cover.
